Mary riles
cello
Mary Riles, cello, received her BA in Classics and BM in Cello Performance from Oberlin College & Conservatory of Music, where she studied with Andor Toth, Jr., and her Masters of Music from the Esther Boyer College of Music at Temple University, where she studied with Jeffrey Solow, whom she met as an award student at the Chautauqua Music Festival. Having relocated to Seattle, Washington, Mary performs with a variety of area ensembles. She is principal cellist for the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra, a member of NOCCO, and has performed with the Seattle Modern Orchestra and other local orchestral ensembles. She is also a frequent chamber ensemble performer, and has soloed locally with the Thalia Symphony and the Kirkland Civic Orchestra. NOCCO is a wonderful musical home, because it incorporates the chamber music processes Mary loves, as well as repertoire ranging from traditional to modern, and cultivates a collegiate atmosphere in which artists work together to create compelling interpretations.
Having grown up in a family of teachers, Mary maintains a diverse private music studio, finding that teaching and performing complement each other productively. As well as private cello lessons, she teaches cello camps, and chamber coaching.
